This should help the reader cope with more advanced information about the subject, as a sound grasp of the basic principles is an important part of any introduction to genetic engineering. I have again been gratified by the many positive comments about the second edition, and I hope that this new edition continues to serve a useful purpose as part of the introductory literature on this fascinating subject. As I found when preparing the second edition of this text, advances in genetics continue to be made at an ever increasing rate, which presents something of a dilemma when writing an introductory text on the subject. In the years since the second edition was published, many new applications of gene manipulation technology have been developed, covering an increasingly diverse range of disciplines and applications. The temptation in preparing this third edition, as was the case for its predecessor, was to concentrate on the applications and ignore the fundamental principles of the technology.

Genetics 101

This is the work of the population geneticist. Population geneticists are interested in gene flow, immigration and emigration, the effects of disruptions in populations and how these events influence the frequency of a trait in a given group of individuals. At the broadest level, evolutionary geneticists and genomicists examine how the sum of the genes in a species, also called the genome, changes over long periods of time. The past decade has seen a tremendous focus on this level of genetics as new technologies and computer applications have allowed the generation and study of large databases of genetic information. Genetics is the study of inheritance. It is a broad science that examines the molecular basis of inheritance at the cellular level, the transmission of traits from generation to generation, and the movement of genes within and between populations. As a science, genetics is both very young and very old. It has only been in the past 50 years that we have discovered the structure of the molecule that carries our genetic information from generation to generation. That molecule is of course deoxyribonucleic acid, or DNA. Yet despite the fact that we have only been studying DNA for a short period of time, the study of genetics now permeates all aspects of the scientific world and our lives.

The other purpose of the plan is to encourage retention of a disciplined approach to analysis of new breakthroughs. We must not lose sight of the principles upon which we wish to guide our acceptance of new technologies and, at the same time, we need resist the urge to factor into logical analysis fundamental philosophical issues that are themselves impossible to resolve through logic or fact gathering. This is not to say that our fundamental concepts of right and wrong are not important for the process of judging new capabilities in the area of genetic engineering, but rather, to indicate that these concepts and principles, as we see them, must assume their proper role in the reasoning process. My third goal is to provide an appreciation. The lack of a holistic and comprehensive understanding of human genetic manipulation on the part of the public as well as groups of specialists has led to a disorganized and often misleading discussion of the issue. One major goal of this book is to demonstrate the importance of recognizing the interrelationship of these scientific and medical fields when evaluating the appropriateness of genetic modification.

The next major area in medical imaging is PET/CT. Positron emission tomography (PET) and Computerized Tomography (CT) are both standard imaging tools that allow physicians to pinpoint the location of cancer within the body before making treatment recommendations. The highly sensitive PET scan detects the metabolic signal of actively growing cancer cells in the body and the CT scan provides a detailed picture of the internal anatomy that reveals the location, size, and shape of abnormal cancerous growths. Alone, each imaging test has particular benefits and limitations, but when the results of PET and CT scans are “fused” together, the combined image provides complete information on the cancer location and metabolism. The next advance in medical imaging that should be mentioned here is represented by “full body scans.” Time was when our best medical minds thought peptic ulcers were a “lifestyle disease,” the result of too much stress, too much spicy food, or some combination thereof. For treatment, doctorly prescriptions included time off from work, chewing your food thoroughly, popping antacids, and drinking quantities of milk. In severe cases, patients went under the knife to have their stomach linings removed.

He is the author of the textbook Applied Numerical Methods with Personal Computers and the co-author of the textbook Numerical Methods for Chemical Engineers with MATLAB Applications. Dr. Constantinides has served as Chairman of the Department, Director of the Graduate Program, Director of the Undergraduate Program, and Director of Alumni Relations. He is the recipient of the prestigious Warren I. Susman Award for Excellence in Teaching (1991), and the recipient of the 1998, 1999, 2003, and 2005 Best Teacher of the Year Awards chosen by the Graduating Senior Class of the Department of Chemical and Biochemical Engineering Prabhas Moghe is Associate Professor of Biomedical Engineering and Associate Professor of Chemical and Biochemical Engineering at Rutgers University. In addition, he holds graduate faculty appointment in the Graduate Program in Cell and Developmental Biology at Rutgers/UMDNJ. He has served as Undergraduate Program Director in Biomedical Engineering and currently directs the NSF IGERT Program on Integratively Engineered Biointerfaces at Rutgers. A Fellow of the American Institute of Medical and Biological Engineering (AIMBE) and a recipient of the NSF CAREER Award and several teaching awards at Rutgers, Dr. Moghe has an active research program in the areas of cellular bioengineering; micro- and nano-systems bioengineering; and cell-interactive biomaterials.

Introduction to Biomedical Engineering, Second Edition provides a historical perspective of the major developments in the biomedical field. The book describes the technological devices, various hardware, tools, and test equipment used in today's healthcare arena. Photographs of representative equipment, the technical and physiological anatomical basis or their function, and where they are commonly found in hospitals are detailed for many biomedical devices, ranging from defibrillators to electrosurgery units. The text includes appendices that supply practical information, such as normal medical values, regulations concerning medical devices, and information on different educational tracks. Introduction to Biomedical Engineering Technology supplies and essential overview of clinical equipment and the devices that are used directly with patients in the course of their care for diagnostic or treatment purposes. The author's practical approach and organization, detailing specific functions of everyday use, prepares students for situations they will encounter on the job. A solutions manual that contains problem sets is available upon adoption.

This handbook provides the reader with an excellent overview of what Biomedical Engineering is and what are the trend that we can expect in the future.The handbook covers 18 different sections, each one containing about 6 different topics. At the beginning of each section there is a short explanation of the main issues that will be covered.

Although the Handbook will not be useful for an expert in one of the topics, it will certainly be useful to explore different areas in Biomedical Engineering for professionals, or students who need a brief but concise and depth analysis for a particular topic.
